Amid a flurry of rumors surrounding Diablo ahead of BlizzCon, the actual reveal shattered expectations: Diablo 5 is set to release in 2029.
On September 12 local time, Blizzard revealed a wealth of Diablo information during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center. In the new season, "Legacy of Hell," which confirms the return of Deckard Cain, players will explore Waking Nightmares. Throughout this journey, players will visit iconic locations such as Tristram Cathedral and the Worldstone Chamber, eventually encountering Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo.
Until now, Mephisto was the only Prime Evil to make a direct appearance in Diablo IV. With the arrival of Baal and the titular Diablo, players can look forward to confronting the series' classic demons once again. In addition, players will be able to choose which demon's power to embrace, and the Stone of Jordan is set to make its return. On September 15, when the new season begins, the Switch 2 version of Diablo IV will also launch.
The most surprising reveal came at the very end. A new cinematic trailer briefly showcased a landscape far more devastated than the world previously known, depicting demons and humans of Sanctuary hunting down angels. The logo for Diablo 5 was then revealed, announcing a Spring 2029 release. A figure presumed to be Diablo also appeared, building anticipation for a showdown with the titular Lord of Terror, whose presence was sorely missed in Diablo IV.
Diablo IV was released on June 6, 2023. Since then, it has depicted full-scale battles with Mephisto across two expansions: Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. As a mainline numbered entry, Diablo 5 will meet fans roughly nine years after Diablo IV.
