The cinematic trailer for the long-shrouded new title based on the 'StarCraft' IP was finally revealed today (13th) during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. As the mystery title lifted its veil for the first time, it signaled a major genre shift away from the traditional series.
General Manager Dan Hay, who is leading development, presented the new title. Dan Hay previously served as an executive producer on 'Far Cry 3' and participated in the development of the 'F.E.A.R.' series.
Before diving into the game reveal, he explained that he was tasked with assembling a team worthy of carrying forward one of Blizzard's most beloved legacies. Expressing his ambition for the project, he introduced the game created by the team he put together.
"Our team was driven by a single objective: to return to space amidst interstellar war and take that story into its next chapter," Hay said. "We want to deliver an experience where you earn every single step yourself. Rather than looking down from above, we want to create an opportunity to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the mud and flames and fight forward together."
Describing the project, he explained, "It is a fresh experience different from before—not a game played from high above in the sky, but an open-world shooter where you must personally conquer every moment on the ground amidst mud and fire. While respecting the tone and authenticity of the existing universe, it offers an opportunity to reach beyond it."
The cinematic trailer that followed offered a glimpse into the atmosphere of the new game, focusing on the training process of a Terran Marine. The video begins with recruits disciplinedly cheering at an instructor's speech. It then shows trainees wielding bladed weapons in combat-like exercises, illustrating the brutally harsh training required to become a Marine.
However, interspersed between training scenes are shots of damaged Marine armor, casting an ominous shadow over the mood. Soon after completing their training, the newly minted Marines board a Barracks drop structure and land on an unfamiliar planet.
Waiting for the confident Marines as they step forward are a massive Overlord and a swarm of Zerg covering the ground. The soldiers' triumphant expressions instantly contort with terror, and before the rushing Zerg swarm, the Marines fall one after another without offering meaningful resistance. The scene dramatically highlights the overwhelming might of the Zerg, rendering all their brutal training seemingly useless.
The scene cuts back to damaged Marine armor. All that remains inside is a blood-soaked dog tag. A mechanic indifferently retrieves the dog tag scattered in a pool of blood and begins restoring the damaged suit.
Set against the backdrop of a commander delivering a passionate speech, countless damaged suits are shown being repaired one after another. The continuous deployment of troops and the refurbishment of gear from fallen soldiers heavily imply that this war will not end quickly. With this, the cinematic video comes to a close.
With this reveal, the new title was officially confirmed as an "open-world shooter." As General Manager Dan Hay emphasized a style where players directly engage in ground combat rather than looking down from high above like previous 'StarCraft' titles, the game appears set to break away from the traditional RTS format and explore the 'StarCraft' universe in a fresh genre and direction.
However, the exact title and specific gameplay mechanics have not yet been revealed. At this BlizzCon, the presentation was limited to introducing the game's atmosphere and open-world shooter direction through the cinematic.
The long-mysterious new 'StarCraft' game is scheduled for release in 2030. Attention is focused on how Blizzard will adapt 'StarCraft'—a staple of the RTS genre—into an open-world shooter, and how the grim reality of war shown in the cinematic will be brought to life in actual gameplay.
