Amid a flurry of rumors surrounding Diablo announcements at BlizzCon, the actual reveal went beyond all expectations: the release of Diablo 5 in 2029.
Blizzard unveiled various Diablo-related details during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony held at the Anaheim Convention Center on September 12 local time. In the new season, "Legacy of Hell," which confirms the return of Deckard Cain, players will explore waking nightmares. Here, they will discover locations such as Tristram Cathedral and the Worldstone Chamber, encountering Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo along their journey.
Until now, Mephisto was the only Prime Evil to make a direct appearance in Diablo 4. With the arrival of Baal and Diablo—the game's namesake—players can expect to face off against the series' traditional demons. Additionally, an option to choose which demon's power to embrace will be added, and the Stone of Jordan is set to return. On September 15, when the season begins, the Switch 2 version of Diablo 4 will also be released.
The biggest surprise came at the end. A new trailer briefly revealed a world far more tragic than previously known, with demons and humans of Sanctuary hunting angels. Following this, the logo for 'Diablo 5' was revealed alongside a Spring 2029 release window. An entity presumed to be Diablo also made an appearance, raising anticipation for a showdown with Diablo, whose role felt lacking in Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 was released on June 6, 2023. Since then, it has depicted a full-scale conflict with Mephisto across two expansions: Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. As a result, Diablo 5 will meet fans as a brand-new title about 9 years after the fourth entry in terms of numbered releases.
