Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio unveiled the new action-adventure game 'God of War: Laufey' during the PlayStation 'State of Play' event held on the 3rd.
'God of War: Laufey' is the first in the series to feature Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, 'Faye,' as the protagonist. Known by her true name, Laufey, she was the catalyst for the journey in 2018's 'God of War' and 'God of War Ragnarök,' but this marks the first time she appears as a playable lead.
The game is set after the funeral of Faye, which served as the prologue to the 2018 title. Following the funeral, she awakens in an unknown world called 'Everywhen' and discovers that the plans she left behind to protect Kratos and Atreus are on the verge of collapse. Everywhen is described as the source and final destination of all magic, a transcendental realm where gods and monsters from various mythologies—not just Norse—converge.
The revealed trailer and gameplay footage showcase a world with a different atmosphere from the existing series. New entities appear, such as a green-skinned goddess, red-skinned deities, and a massive six-legged lion-like divine beast, alongside mythological elements that appear to be of Egyptian and Central Asian origin. This has sparked speculation that the series may be expanding beyond Norse mythology into a broader mythological universe.
Combat also differs from the heavy, Kratos-centric action of previous titles. Faye wields a massive blade and soul-manipulation abilities, offering high-mobility combat that flows freely between the ground and the air. A core feature is the new combat system, which allows players to separate an enemy's soul from its body to attack directly or throw it at other foes. Santa Monica Studio explained that they have combined the combat structure of the modern 'God of War' series with the speed and combo-heavy action of the earlier Greek-era games.
Faye is joined on her journey by new companions: 'Phranque,' a talkative cosmic cube, and 'Rue,' a living ribbon-like guardian, who assist in combat and exploration as she traverses various worlds. The voice cast includes Deborah Ann Woll as Faye and Jack Quaid as Phranque.
With this title, Santa Monica Studio plans to shed light on Faye's past and her human side, which had previously remained in the background of the story. 'God of War: Laufey' is currently in development for PlayStation 5, with a release date to be announced later.
