Amid a flurry of Diablo-related rumors leading up to BlizzCon, the actual announcement exceeded all expectations: the release of Diablo 5 in 2029.
On September 12 local time, during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony at the Anaheim Convention Center, Blizzard revealed a variety of Diablo details. In the new season, "Legacy of Hell," which confirms the return of Deckard Cain, players will explore waking nightmares. Throughout this journey, they will visit sites like Tristram Cathedral and the Worldstone Chamber, crossing paths with Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo himself.
Until now, Mephisto was the only major Prime Evil to make a direct appearance in Diablo IV. With the arrival of Baal and the game's namesake, Diablo, players can look forward to battling the series' classic demons. In addition, a new feature allowing players to choose which demon's power to embrace will be added, and the Stone of Jordan is set to return. On September 15, when the season kicks off, the Switch 2 version of Diablo IV will also be released.
The biggest surprise came at the end. A new cinematic briefly showcased a world far more harrowing than previously known, where demons and humans of Sanctuary actively hunt down angels. Following this, the logo for 'Diablo 5' was revealed along with a Spring 2029 release window. A figure presumed to be Diablo also made an appearance, raising expectations for a showdown with Diablo himself—a presence that felt understated in Diablo IV.
Diablo IV was released on June 6, 2023. Since then, it has depicted a full-scale confrontation with Mephisto across two expansions, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. Consequently, Diablo 5 will meet fans as the next numbered entry roughly nine years after Diablo IV.
