The cinematic trailer for the long-shrouded 'StarCraft' IP title was finally revealed today (13th) during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. As the new title, which had kept out of sight for a long time, unveiled itself for the first time, it teased a genre shift distinct from the existing series.
The introduction of the new title was delivered by General Manager Dan Hay, who is leading development. Dan Hay previously served as a producer on 'Far Cry 3' and participated in the development of the 'F.E.A.R.' series.
Before introducing the game in earnest, he explained that he was tasked with assembling a team worthy of carrying on one of Blizzard's most beloved legacies. He then expressed his ambitions for the new title, stating he would introduce the game created by the team he assembled.
General Manager Dan Hay said, "Our team pushed forward toward a single purpose: returning to space amid interstellar warfare and leading that story into its next chapter." He added, "We will deliver an experience where you earn every step yourself. Rather than looking down from above, we want to create an opportunity to march together shoulder to shoulder, in the mud and in the flames."
He continued to describe the title as "a new game different from the past—an open-world shooter where, instead of looking down from high in the sky, you must personally conquer every moment right on the ground in the midst of mud and flames," adding, "It respects the tone and authenticity of the existing universe while providing an opportunity to push beyond it."
The cinematic trailer released afterward offered a glimpse into the atmosphere of the new game, focusing on the training process of a Terran Marine. The video opens with trainees cheering disciplinedly at their instructor's speech. It then shows them engaging in combat training with bladed weapons as if in real warfare, depicting the grueling process required to become a Marine.
However, interspersed between training scenes are shots of damaged Marine suits, creating a somewhat ominous mood. Soon, the soldiers who complete their training and become official Marines board a Barracks—the so-called 'Barracks'—and land on a planet.
What awaited the Marines as they valiantly stepped forward was a massive Overlord and a swarm of Zerg filling the ground. The triumphant expressions of the soldiers instantly contort in terror, and before the incoming Zerg swarm, the Marines fall one after another without being able to put up any proper resistance. It is a scene showcasing the overwhelming power of the Zerg, rendering all their harsh training utterly futile.
The scene cuts back to a damaged Marine suit. All that remains inside is a blood-stained dog tag. A mechanic indifferently pulls out dog tags scattered in a pool of blood and begins repairing the damaged suit.
Against the background of a commander giving a passionate speech, numerous damaged suits are shown being restored one after another. The continuous deployment of troops and the refurbishment of fallen soldiers' equipment imply that this war will not end anytime soon. With this, the cinematic video comes to a close.
Through this reveal, it was officially confirmed that the new title is an "open-world shooter." As General Manager Dan Hay emphasized a gameplay style where players directly participate in combat on the ground rather than looking down from high in the sky like the existing 'StarCraft' series, the title is expected to move away from the RTS format of the original series to explore the world of 'StarCraft' through a new genre and approach.
However, the exact title and specific gameplay details have not yet been disclosed. At this BlizzCon, the reveal was limited to showing the tone of the new game and its directional shift as an open-world shooter through the cinematic.
The long-shrouded new 'StarCraft' title is scheduled for release in 2030. Attention is focused on how Blizzard will translate 'StarCraft', an iconic RTS franchise, into the new genre of an open-world shooter, and how the vision of war showcased in this cinematic will be implemented in the actual game.
