Slay the Spire 2 is a roguelike deck-building game in which players collect cards to build a deck and climb a spire along paths that change with every run. Following its Early Access launch last March, the game introduced co-op play for up to four players. Since that same month, it has also operated a beta branch to test changes before applying them to the main version.
Experimental game modes were first named in the Early Access roadmap released last April. Mega Crit shared in its September developer update that it was internally testing new features and modes, though it did not reveal the timing of the next patch at that time. In its October newsletter released on the 29th, the developer set November 12 as the target date.
Mega Crit explained that it has been focusing on developing major content since August. Releasing new features to the beta requires design, user experience, art and animation, and balancing work, making it difficult to proceed simultaneously with routine balance adjustments and bug fixes.
The new experimental content will initially apply only to the beta branch. The main branch is set to receive the content, balance adjustments, and bug fixes already implemented in the current beta version v0.111.0. The v0.111.0 patch released by Mega Crit in August featured reworks for certain cards, balance and performance tweaks, and low-health idle animations for characters. To use the beta branch, players can select 'public-beta' in the game properties on Steam.
