Bungie has warned Destiny fans not to expect an announcement at The Game Awards this year, and said bringing removed content back to Destiny 2 will take about a year of full production once pre-production ends in early 2027.
The news came in the first Bungie Community Update, a Q&A between Bungie's dmg04 and Head of Product Josh Deane that the studio shared on X (formerly Twitter) on October 29th. "Don't expect us to make a Destiny announcement at the TGA's this year," Deane said.
What is coming back to Destiny 2
Over the years Bungie 'vaulted', or removed, older Destiny 2 expansions from the game. Deane said the studio could not move forward "without first repairing trust and making Destiny 2 'whole'," and admitted that vaulting "broke faith with our community." The first pass, available to all players, restores the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns, along with their strikes, raids and raid lairs. The Menagerie activity also returns with reprised rewards.
Bungie listed free-roam destinations, seasonal activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23), raid weapon updates and PvP maps as stretch goals. It said it currently has no path to bring back an updated New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Kell's Grave Gambit map or seasonal hubs.
The unvaulting timeline
According to Deane, Bungie got its first greenlight in June to scope the work and find an outside partner to help with the port. The studio validated its plans in September and is now in a pre-production, proof-of-work stage that should run until around January or February. Full production is then expected to take roughly 12 months. No release date has been given.
Deane also named two other Destiny projects, a Destiny 2 'Celebration' for current players and a Destiny 'Legacy' effort, with a third left redacted. Bungie plans to share progress on the first two in February. On the Marathon side, the Symbiosis update is due in December, with the next Dev Insight video planned for early December.
