Sony Pictures has picked up the feature film rights to Mouthwashing, the psychological horror game from Swedish developer Wrong Organ and publisher CRITICAL REFLEX, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct.

The deal was first reported by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, and Wrong Organ confirmed it soon after on X (formerly Twitter). "The rumors are true," the studio wrote, adding that Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay will write the script. "The Tulpar journey goes on, we hope it continues to hurt."

Who is making the Mouthwashing film

Kusama directed Jennifer's Body, The Invitation and Destroyer, and Manfredi and Hay have written several of her films, including The Invitation. According to Deadline, Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng will produce through their company Crooked Highway, which has a deal with Sony's Screen Gems label.

CRITICAL REFLEX said the film will be produced by Screen Gems. "You thought you could escape responsibility by turning off your console?" the publisher wrote in its own post. No cast, story details or release window have been announced yet.

What Mouthwashing is about

Mouthwashing is set aboard the Tulpar, a doomed space freighter. Five crew members are stranded with dwindling supplies and no hope of rescue, and players explore the ship to piece together what happened.

The game first came out on PC in 2024. According to CRITICAL REFLEX, it has sold more than 800,000 copies and won Best Narrative and Players' Choice at the Horror Game Awards. The film news landed on the same day the game arrived on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC and Xbox Game Pass, its first console release.
