Netflix is developing a live-action series based on Krafton's battle royale game PUBG, with Donald Glover set to direct and star.
According to a report from Deadline, Glover will also write and executive produce the show with his brother Stephen Glover. Deadline said the series came together after lengthy negotiations, with Netflix bringing Glover on board. Variety, which also reported the project, said plot details are being kept under wraps.
Michael Schaefer of Neon TV, Fam Udeorji of Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee of LV3H, Krafton's entertainment division, are also executive producing. Netflix and Krafton had not announced the series on their own channels at the time of writing.
PUBG's road to the screen
PUBG, originally titled PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, launched in 2017 and has set seven Guinness World Records, according to Deadline. The game has no story. Players drop onto one of several maps, scavenge weapons, vehicles and gear, and fight until one is left standing.
Krafton first announced plans for a PUBG film and TV series in 2020, and LV3H handles the development and production of entertainment projects under the franchise. An animated series from Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar, announced in 2021, was previously in development at Netflix. Earlier this year, Krafton also laid out plans to grow PUBG into a content platform, including a move into media content.
Glover and Netflix's game slate
The Glover brothers worked together on FX's Atlanta, which Donald created and starred in, with both writing and executive producing. Donald won two Emmys for the show, one for acting and one for directing. The pair later teamed up again on Amazon's Swarm.
PUBG joins a growing list of game adaptations at Netflix. The streamer has a live-action Assassin's Creed series and a live-action Gears of War film in the works, along with animated series based on Minecraft and Clash of Clans.
