Shueisha Games and Swedish studio Apog Labs have launched ATMOSFAR, a sci-fi survival game set among the floating islands of an alien planet, in Steam Early Access as of October 29th, with online co-op for up to four players.
According to a release, the game costs $24.99 (£22.49 or €25.49). A 10% launch discount runs for the first two weeks; on launch day the Steam store page listed it at $22.49. An Early Access launch trailer was released alongside the news.
Early Access is Steam's program for games that are still in development. Players buy in early. The game keeps changing as the studio adds content and fixes problems.
ATMOSFAR can be played solo or with up to three friends online. It takes place on Tycos, a remote planet, where players try to learn what happened to humanity's furthest outpost. More is on the official ATMOSFAR website.
How ATMOSFAR plays
Flight is the core of the game, built on what the release calls ‘intuitive physics-based flight mechanics’. Around it sit resource management and base-building, plus expeditions on foot to abandoned facilities. Most of the exploring happens in the air.
Players run a fleet of small aircraft called Wasps. The Utility Wasp sets up a mobile camp, the Hauler Wasp airlifts heavy scrap and the Fighter Wasp is built for speed. Each one needs upkeep.
The biggest vessel is the Cloud Cruiser: a ‘colossal, customisable mobile airbase’, in the release's words. Players craft new modules for it (and find new tools) to reach higher, unexplored parts of the world. Tycos has several biomes. Its hazards include alien creatures and extreme weather.
Apog Labs is an indie studio based in Malmö, Sweden. Its previous game is Airport CEO, which the release calls ‘the world's biggest airport tycoon game’.
Shueisha Games was founded in February 2022 and is headquartered in Tokyo. It plans, develops and sells games for consoles, PC and smartphones; it is also bringing the ball sport action game BAKUDO to Nintendo Switch 2.
