Development of 'Prologue: The Way Back!', a project by Brendan Greene—known for creating PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds—has been canceled.
On the 4th, PlayerUnknown Productions announced the cancellation and the downsizing of the studio via its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The studio stated that the development team currently lacks the resources to continue, making the cancellation and restructuring unavoidable due to operational difficulties.
However, a small team will remain to continue research and development on 'Melba,' the procedural terrain generation technology that served as the game's core foundation. The studio also added that it is actively supporting affected team members in their job searches and future career transitions.
Follow-up measures for existing purchasers were also announced. PlayerUnknown Productions explained, "We plan to transition 'Prologue: Go Way Back!' to a free-to-play model for all users in a future update," adding, "We are also exploring options to provide refunds to players who pre-purchased the game via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Further details will be announced at a later date."
PlayerUnknown Productions is an independent studio founded in 2021 by Brendan Greene. The team had been developing 'Prologue: Go Way Back!', a massive-scale open world roguelike survival game utilizing their proprietary 'Melba' technology, but the project has reached an unfortunate end due to the studio's operational challenges.
