Bungie recently announced that it will end updates for its looter shooter 'Destiny 2' (known as 'Destiny Guardians' in Korea) on June 9, sparking a viral petition campaign demanding the development of a sequel.

On the 21st (local time), Bungie announced via the official 'Destiny 2' blog that it would cease development of new content following the June 9 update. While the game itself will remain playable, much like its predecessor 'Destiny,' the end of new content updates effectively marks the conclusion of the 'Destiny 2' live service.

The news drew immediate criticism from the community, particularly regarding the sudden nature of the announcement. 'Destiny 2' had concluded its decade-long saga of Light and Darkness with the release of 'The Final Shape' in June 2024. However, the game continued to roll out new narratives well after that milestone, including the 'Frontiers of Fate' expansion on July 16, 2025, and the 10th expansion, 'Resister,' on December 3, 2025.

With the game actively expanding its story, the abrupt news of a content freeze has amplified disappointment and frustration. Some players have speculated that the recent underperformance of Bungie's extraction shooter 'Marathon' may have forced 'Destiny 2' to bear the brunt of the consequences, with some users even leaving negative reviews on the 'Marathon' Steam page.

Amid this backlash, a petition on Change.org, the world's largest platform for social advocacy, has gained significant traction, calling for the development of a sequel, tentatively titled 'Destiny 3.' Launched on the 23rd, the petition gathered over 170k signatures in just two days. On Reddit, users are rallying support with slogans like, "We decide our own destiny."

Community members are also organizing a movement to "all log in on June 9, the day of the final update, to show our passion to Bungie and its parent company, Sony."

However, there is widespread skepticism that this petition will lead to any changes in the 'Destiny 2' development roadmap or trigger the development of a 'Destiny 3.' The petition itself holds no legal weight. Nevertheless, given the unified voice of so many users, attention is now focused on how Bungie and Sony will respond.
