Contrary to pre-release concerns about video game adaptations, 'A Minecraft Movie' proved to be a global box-office hit and is now returning with a sequel. Titled 'A Minecraft Movie Squared,' the film is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
Warner Bros. and Legendary officially announced the title and release date during the Minecraft Live broadcast on the 30th. Warner Bros. had previously teased the sequel's production and a July release window via its official social media channels last October. This broadcast provided more detailed information and officially confirmed the title for the first time. Along with the title reveal, news of new casting and the first behind-the-scenes footage were also released.
The word 'Squared' in the title refers to the mathematical operation of squaring a number. The film also suggests that the title is meant to sound 'cooler' than a simple sequel. Meanwhile, some analysts interpret 'square' as a play on words referencing the blocky, cubic world of Minecraft.
Building on the success of the first film, the main cast and production team will remain largely unchanged. Jason Momoa and Jack Black, who played Garrett Garrison and Steve, respectively, are set to return, and director Jared Hess will once again helm the project. The screenplay will also be written by Hess and Chris Galletta, just as it was for the first film. This suggests an intention to maintain the same tone by keeping the successful combination of director, writers, and actors intact.

Alex, another iconic character alongside Steve, will also make an appearance. Alex will be played by Kirsten Dunst, known for her roles in 'Interview with the Vampire,' 'Jumanji,' 'Bring It On,' Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' trilogy, and 'Melancholia.' Dunst, who announced her involvement through the behind-the-scenes video, greeted fans and encouraged them to see her in theaters next summer.
Filming is currently underway in New Zealand, and the broadcast featured Jack Black and Jason Momoa appearing directly from the set to share the atmosphere.
The production of the sequel was driven by the overwhelming box-office success of the original. Released in 2025, 'A Minecraft Movie' earned $163 million in its opening weekend in North America alone, setting a record for the highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation, and went on to gross approximately $960 million worldwide. The film also generated significant buzz, with various scenes going viral as memes shortly after its release. Consequently, discussions for a sequel began early, and production was officially announced in October 2025.
