Arc System Works Announces Donutal

Arc System Works America has announced a new narrative-focused title, unveiling Donutal, an alien screening adventure game slated for release on Steam in 2026. The publisher confirmed that the game’s Steam store page is now live and that players can download a free demo beginning today.

According to Arc System Works America, Donutal places players in the role of a “Chief Xeno Inspector” in the year 2206. The story unfolds at an International Space Port constructed atop the remnants of the former International Space Station. The protagonist, awakened from a 150-year cryosleep, is tasked with screening aliens seeking entry to Earth in order to repay a debt they cannot remember incurring.

The game centers on dialogue-driven investigations, with players required to determine the intentions of alien visitors. While some characters may seek entry for tourism or study, the developer emphasizes that screening decisions will directly affect the course of the narrative and Earth’s future.

Core gameplay mechanics focus on group-based interactions. Players will screen aliens in groups of up to eight, extracting critical details from conversations, suspicions and interpersonal dynamics. The title also introduces a simultaneous interrogation system, allowing players to question two characters at once. Character responses may vary depending on relationships, species differences or hidden motives, potentially revealing contradictions.

Arc System Works America describes the game as heavily choice-driven. Decisions made during screenings are reflected through in-game news reports, which detail the consequences of the player’s judgments. Outcomes range from positive developments for Earth to irreversible setbacks, depending on which aliens are admitted.

Several key characters were also revealed. DOLPHIN, an android assistant, provides operational support but does not participate in moral decision-making. Other alien types include Martians, described as biologically incapable of lying; Pictors, portrayed as technologically advanced beings; and Octos, noted for their intelligence and distinct communication style.

While a specific release date was not provided, Arc System Works America stated that additional details will be shared at a later time. Players can currently wishlist the game via Steam and access the demo to preview early gameplay.

Arc System Works America is best known for publishing fighting game franchises including Guilty Gear and BlazBlue.
