Switch 2 Sells 1.6 Million Units in the U.S. in One Month — Could It Become America’s Leading Console

According to market research firm Circana (formerly the NPD Group), the Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record for first‑month sales among all consoles in U.S. history. Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5 and sold 3.5 million units worldwide within just four days—the fastest launch pace ever for a Nintendo console. That momentum carried over to the U.S. market as well: in June alone, 1.6 million units of the Switch 2 were sold stateside, marking the highest first‑month sales ever recorded in American gaming history. The previous record was held by Sony’s PlayStation 4, which sold 1.1 million units in November 2013.

As a result, other industry indicators have risen in tandem. Total consumer spending on video game content in the U.S. reached $4.4 billion in June, a 6% increase year‑over‑year, with console content accounting for 19% of that growth. Although cumulative 2025 sales to date remain higher for Sony’s PlayStation 5, the Switch 2 has only been on sale for less than two months, making it too early to predict where year‑end totals will land.

Overall U.S. spending on game hardware, content, and accessories was up 22% year‑over‑year. While 2025’s figures still trail 2024 by 2% through June, with over five months remaining in the year it’s all but certain that 2025 will surpass 2024’s total.

Notably, among U.S. purchasers of the Switch 2, 82% also bought Mario Kart World —a figure that counts only physical and bundled package sales, excluding individual digital downloads. Industry insiders attribute the Switch 2’s success in the U.S. to the strong lineup of AAA titles and exclusives available at launch. Ports of Elden Ring: Nightreign and Cyberpunk 2077 are slated to arrive, and Nintendo swiftly filled its launch catalog by releasing Donkey Kong: Bananza.

Moreover, the Switch 2 frenzy in the U.S. shows no signs of abating. Although initial stock has sold out online, retailers continue to replenish inventory, and with the Pokémon Legends: Z‑A bundle scheduled for October, sales are expected to surge once again.
