Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone, the developer of Stardew Valley, has officially confirmed that recent rumors regarding the addition of a 'home-wrecking' feature for married NPCs are false.

In an interview with Game Informer on the 12th, Barone made an unexpected comment. When asked about changes he had considered but ultimately shelved due to concerns over player reaction, he mentioned that some fans had expressed a desire to marry NPCs who were already in established relationships, such as Caroline, Robin, and Demetrius. He added, 'Personally, I'm morally opposed to it, but I think in a sandbox game, it should be possible to do bad things and deal with the consequences.'
He continued, 'Even if I added features like affairs or breaking up families, the whole town would end up hating the player,' noting that there would be serious consequences. He made his skepticism clear, stating that such a narrative felt too realistic for a game designed to be an escape from reality. However, once these comments surfaced, some interpreted them as a confirmation that an affair feature was in development. The situation escalated when international outlets translated the article as 'considering the introduction of affairs and divorce,' which then circulated back into English-speaking communities, causing confusion. Essentially, a hypothetical, somewhat joking remark was mistaken for an actual development plan.
Ultimately, Barone took to social media to clarify the situation. He explained that some of the quotes had been taken out of context and did not accurately reflect his intent. He noted that the specific content he had theoretically considered involved characters like Pierre, Caroline, and the Robin/Demetrius couple. He emphasized that he decided against it because it was too heavy and serious a subject, and the sheer amount of work required to rewrite the dialogue and atmosphere for the entire town would be immense. He added, jokingly, that his grandfather would be disappointed, and confirmed that it was merely a theoretical thought experiment. He reiterated that he does not encourage such behavior and has no intention of implementing it.
Stardew Valley is considered a quintessential 'cozy game,' often described as a healing experience. The core sentiment of the game revolves around peaceful daily routines, such as planting and harvesting crops or giving gifts to villagers. While the villagers have their own backstories, their relationships are designed to feel like a warm, safe environment. Conversely, the act of breaking up a married NPC's family would directly dismantle that sense of security. By choosing not to include this, Barone has opted to preserve the game's core atmosphere, especially since the NPCs in question serve as the foundation of the village community.
Stardew Valley continues to receive regular updates more than a decade after its release. Barone also took the opportunity to dismiss all rumors and leaks regarding the upcoming 1.7 update as fake. Meanwhile, he is currently working on the 1.7 update—which will add Sandy and Clint as marriage candidates—alongside the development of his new title, Haunted Chocolatier.
