Arenanet, a studio under NC, officially unveiled its new MMORPG, 'Guild Wars 3,' at Summer Game Fest 2026 (SGF 2026). As the first numbered sequel in about 14 years since the 2012 release of 'Guild Wars 2,' the title had already been building anticipation among fans through teaser images and cryptic messages prior to the announcement.
According to the revealed information, 'Guild Wars 3' is set in 'Tyria', the world of the series, but takes place in a much earlier era than previous entries. It is known to be a prequel that focuses on the 'Guild Wars' era, a pivotal period in the original lore. By setting the game during the time when human kingdoms and guild factions clashed, players will be able to directly experience historical events that were previously only mentioned in the series.
According to its Steam page, the game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and highlights large-scale open world exploration, dynamic combat, and a world that changes based on player choices as its core features. The studio also plans to modernize the series' signature large-scale community experience through guild-focused cooperative content, massive PVP wars, and a world event system.
Since the launch of the first title in 2005, the 'Guild Wars' series has garnered attention for its subscription-free MMORPG model and PVP-centric content, while its successor, 'Guild Wars 2', has maintained a dedicated global fanbase over years of service. Following the release of 'Guild Wars Reforged' last year—which updated the original game for modern environments—this new announcement marks a full-scale generational shift for the series.
Alongside the announcement, Arenanet released the first cinematic trailer for the game. While a specific release date has not yet been announced, the Steam page confirms a PC version is in development, with further information to be released sequentially.
