Live streaming and the uploading of gameplay videos for the upcoming science adventure title 'STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT,' set for release this August, will be strictly prohibited.
| 📒 | - MAGES. Bans Live Streaming and Gameplay Video Uploads for Steins;Gate RE:BOOT - Public sharing deemed to exceed the scope of private use - Despite 2023 court ruling on gameplay videos, guidelines must be followed |
Through the official Steins;Gate RE:BOOT website, MAGES. has explicitly stated that it will not permit the uploading of gameplay videos or live commentary streams. Usage is restricted solely to personal use via the built-in sharing functions of home consoles. The company explains that sharing content with the general public exceeds the scope of private use and is therefore prohibited.
The nature of the product is cited as the reason for this policy. Unlike action, adventure, or RPG genres, the story itself is the core value of a visual novel. Because the work can be fully consumed simply by watching gameplay footage, developers often use guidelines to restrict or entirely ban the uploading of video content.
The Steins;Gate series has previously taken a hardline stance against such guideline violations. In 2023, the Sendai District Court sentenced a Japanese creator in his 50s to two years in prison, suspended for five years, and a fine of ¥1 million for copyright infringement. Between 2019 and 2022, the individual had uploaded unauthorized videos of the Steins;Gate series to YouTube in violation of the company's guidelines. These included 'spoiler videos' edited to reveal the ending of the work in a short amount of time.
As accessibility to video platforms like YouTube and live streaming services increases, video sharing guidelines are being expanded across narrative-driven games. Atlus has strictly prohibited the sharing of videos and screenshots from Persona 5 Royal beyond a certain point in the story, and Square Enix also restricts cutscene-heavy videos and music-focused gameplay clips for the Final Fantasy VII Remake series.
Meanwhile, MAGES. unveiled Steins;Gate RE:BOOT during the series' 15th-anniversary event in 2024. After a delay, the game is now confirmed for release on August 20 and is based on the animated remake title, Steins;Gate Elite. The new version will feature re-recorded lines from the original voice cast, newly drawn graphics, E-mote technology for 2D animation, and new endings.
