Gamescom 2026, the world's largest gaming exhibition, is set to take place in Cologne, Germany, from August 26 to 30. With full support and attention from the German political establishment, the event is cementing its status as a major national occasion.
The event has drawn significant attention, particularly with the announcement that German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be in attendance. This symbolically underscores the growing importance of Gamescom, which has evolved beyond a mere gaming event to become a vital component of Germany's culture, society, and future strategy.
President Steinmeier is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Gamescom Congress on August 27. Following his speech, he will participate in a panel discussion on the role of games in democracy.
Now in its 18th year, the Gamescom Congress is a companion conference that examines the impact of gaming across society, including education, culture, business, and science. At the previous event, over 180 experts—including former Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason—discussed how games function in areas such as democracy, education, environmental protection, and well-being. This year, the congress will focus on exploring ways to use games to strengthen social cohesion and democratic participation, while highlighting how gaming technology creates tangible value in daily life and industry.
Meanwhile, the official opening ceremony on August 26 will be graced by Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, Minister of Research, Technology and Space Dorothee Bär, and North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst. Following the ceremony, they plan to tour the exhibition floor to observe the latest trends in the gaming industry and engage with industry professionals.
The director of Gamescom emphasized that the participation of Germany's head of state and key cabinet ministers is a recognition that the gaming industry is a core driver of national innovation and cultural value, rather than just entertainment. They added that Gamescom 2026 will set a new standard for the global gaming industry and social discourse.
