Marvelous USA has shared an English-subtitled ‘Special Discussion’ video series for its upcoming RPG Eternal Anima, with director Katsuhisa Higuchi sitting down with Hironobu Sakaguchi and composers Nobuo Uematsu and Hitoshi Sakimoto.
According to a release, Eternal Anima launches March 4th 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The videos bring together members of the development team and guests from the Japanese game industry to talk about their careers and how the game was made.
Sakaguchi is the creator of Final Fantasy, and Uematsu wrote the music for much of that series. Marvelous says Eternal Anima is ‘dedicated to JRPG fans’ and inspired by the golden era of RPGs.
Sakaguchi and Higuchi on legacy
In the first episode, Higuchi and Sakaguchi of Mistwalker reunite to talk about the game's central idea: ‘legacy.’ The two made JRPGs together for many years, according to the release. They trade views on the genre, down to small details like what goes inside treasure chests.
They also explain how the team wrote a time-travel story without creating paradoxes. Psychometry comes up too; it plays a part in how characters learn new skills and in the Future Sight Battle combat system.
Uematsu and Sakimoto on JRPG music
The second episode brings in Hitoshi Sakimoto of Basiscape, the game's music producer, alongside guest composer Uematsu. Higuchi joins them. They talk about musical expression and the challenges of writing music for JRPGs, along with their hopes for the next generation of composers.
Future Sight Battles and Psychometry
Eternal Anima's story spans several continents and generations. Players team up with ancestors and descendants, and what happens in the past changes the present. Allies can also be given the abilities of their ancestors.
Combat runs through Future Sight Battles, which the release describes as classic JRPG combat ‘with a tactical twist.’ Players predict what enemies will do, then pick commands that can delay or cancel those moves. Wade's power of Psychometry reads memories stored in artifacts, letting players inherit the abilities and classes of past heroes and mix them into their own playstyle.
Pre-orders and editions
Physical pre-orders are open at participating retailers and the Marvelous USA online store. The standard edition costs $49.99 on PS5 and $59.99 on Switch 2, with the full game on the cartridge. A Limited Edition adds a two-disc soundtrack, nine character art cards with a display stand and an art book for $79.99 on PS5 and $89.99 on Switch 2. Digital edition details will come later.
Eternal Anima is developed by Marvelous and published by Marvelous USA in the Americas and by Marvelous Europe in Europe and Australia. It is rated T for Teen by the ESRB. More information is available on the official site.
