GSC Game World has released Update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, its open-world survival shooter, on PC and consoles, adding two fan-requested features: adjustable A-Life NPC visualisation distance and fast travel with squad leaders.
According to a release, the update went live on October 19th. GSC also put out an update overview trailer. The studio called this patch ‘almost entirely community-driven’, saying it was shaped by player feedback from social media, forums and reviews.
A-Life is the series' name for its simulated population of the Zone (stalkers and mutants that roam, trade blows and move on whether or not the player is nearby). Update 2.1 gives players more say over how much of it they see.
Choosing how far the Zone reaches
Players can now set how far away A-Life NPCs appear. The presets sit under Settings, then Game, then Visualisation. GSC recommends the default preset for the best balance of performance and stability; pushing the range higher may hurt both. A Dynamic preset adjusts the range to suit the player's PC or console. The presets on offer may vary by platform.
Long-range combat got a pass too. Depending on the preset, gunfights can now be heard breaking out much farther away, with weapon ballistics adjusted to match. The wider range mainly covers A-Life NPCs. Quest and scripted characters are handled separately, which GSC said keeps the game stable.
Fast travel with squad leaders
Friendly or neutral squad leaders now show up on the compass. Talk to one, and they can guide the player to a nearby destination along their route. It costs money. Only nearby locations the player has already explored are available, and weight limits still apply (the release notes that guides won't carry anyone's backpack). Long trips are out: a stalker from Zalissya won't take players ‘all the way to Prypiat’, according to GSC.
Update 2.1 also includes bug fixes and visual tweaks. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available on Steam and consoles; GSC recently released Cost of Hope, the first story expansion for the base game.
Founded in 1995, GSC Game World is a Ukrainian developer known for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Cossacks series. The studio said it continues to support Ukraine during the war, and pointed players who want to help to the official fund of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
