The latest entry in Nintendo's flagship SRPG series, 'Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave', has officially launched on the Switch 2. Upon release, the game debuted with critical scores of 89 on Metacritic and 90 on OpenCritic. Although the number of reviews continues to grow in real time, critics generally agree that Intelligent Systems has grandly expanded the winning formula of its predecessor, 'Fire Emblem: Three Houses'. Consequently, the final score is expected to settle around a similar level.
The most defining feature of Fortune's Weave is that four independent protagonists—Dietrich, Theodora, Cai, and Leda—each have their own stories, yet all their journeys are organically intertwined into one massive overarching narrative. Critics consistently noted that each route possesses a density comparable to a complete, standalone Fire Emblem game, while showering high praise on the strategic combat design as being among the best in the series' history.
Another key strength is that despite its massive length well exceeding 100 hours, the overall quality remains steady, with non-combat content such as the colosseum, dungeons, and free exploration weaving seamlessly into the core gameplay. It effectively combines the strengths proven across Nintendo Switch's two preceding titles, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Engage. However, some criticisms have also been raised, pointing to a somewhat slow pacing in the early game, repetitive routines during the free time management phase, and narrative differentiation across routes that falls slightly short of expectations.
Despite being known for its high difficulty even among Nintendo's major franchises, Fire Emblem continues to deliver on fan expectations and high satisfaction. Its newest title and first Nintendo Switch 2 entry, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, is available starting September 17.
