Square Enix's flagship franchise, the Dragon Quest series, has surpassed 100 million copies in cumulative total shipments and digital sales.
On the 16th, Square Enix announced via the official Dragon Quest website that the combined figure of worldwide physical shipments and digital sales for the series had exceeded 100 million units. Digital sales reflect figures tracked since April 2015, including digital versions of packaged games and main digital-only titles for consoles and PC.
Dragon Quest is a flagship JRPG series whose first entry debuted on the Famicom on May 27, 1986. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the series had officially reported cumulative shipments and digital sales of over 97 million copies as of February. It surpassed the 100 million mark roughly seven months later.
To mark the 100 million milestone, series creator and game designer Yuji Horii also shared a message of gratitude with fans.
"Cumulative shipments and digital sales for the Dragon Quest series have surpassed a staggering 100 million copies," Horii stated. "I am filled with gratitude to share such joyful news during this meaningful time of Dragon Quest's 40th anniversary." He added, "We will continue working hard to bring you thrilling adventures in the future, so please continue to support us."
Meanwhile, marking its 40th anniversary, Dragon Quest is currently developing its latest main entry, 'Dragon Quest XII: Beyond the Dream', alongside 'Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Bianca and Flora of the Arid Land'. Dragon Quest XII is undergoing a revamped development structure as work continues, while Dragon Quest Monsters 4 is set for official release on December 3.
