On September 15, Kakao Games revealed the worldbuilding and in-game details for Supercat's upcoming 2.5D MMORPG 'World of Dokkaebi' through its pre-registration page. The game is scheduled to officially launch on October 8.
'World of Dokkaebi' is a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean folklore, dokkaebi (goblins), and mythical creatures, based on the web novel IP 'Myeolgwi Sudojeon'. It infuses Eastern fantasy with Korean sentiment and aesthetic form, applying hybrid visuals that combine 2D pixel-art characters with 3D backgrounds. Traditional Korean elements such as roof tiles, stone lanterns, and jangseung (totem poles) are also rendered in pixel art.
Real-time 3D lighting and shadow effects are applied to the characters. The sense of depth changes depending on the time of day and light sources, and entities from traditional folklore such as dokkaebi and monsters are also depicted in pixel graphics.
On the recently updated pre-registration page, players can check out game fields and key content. Non-combat life and community features, including combat against tiger-shaped monsters as well as fishing and social interactions between characters, were also introduced.
In this world, humans who resonate with spiritual energy to gain special powers and form bonds with divine beasts become 'Dosa' (Taoist masters) who protect the natural order of the world. Players take on the role of a Dosa to face monsters and specters threatening world peace, aiming to reach the celestial realm.
A Kakao Games representative stated, "Through the pre-registration page, we are sequentially showcasing the unique art style, worldbuilding, and various gameplay elements of 'World of Dokkaebi'." They added, "We will do our utmost until launch on optimization and final development steps to deliver stable live operations and K-fantasy grounded in Korean folklore."
