In an interview with Bloomberg on the 5th, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the console-first strategy for GTA6. "Rockstar has always released on consoles first. For a game of this scale, I believe we are judged by how well we serve our core customers," Zelnick said. He added, "If our core customers don't receive the best service first, we won't be able to reach customers on other platforms effectively." This effectively signals that Rockstar intends to continue its long-standing strategy of prioritizing console users as its core audience.
After years of anticipation, GTA6 is set to launch on November 19 of this year. While Take-Two has recently highlighted the success of its PC titles and has pushed for simultaneous console and PC releases for games from its other studios, GTA6 will launch only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There has been no mention of a PC release date. As with previous GTA titles, it is expected that a PC version will be announced separately sometime after the console launch.
Meanwhile, when asked if a marketing deal with Sony influenced the PC release, Zelnick did not comment on the existence of such a deal. However, he drew a clear line, stating that the console-first approach is unrelated to marketing agreements and is simply a continuation of Rockstar's historical release pattern.
Previously, the hacking group ShinyHunters leaked internal financial data after Rockstar refused to yield to extortion threats. The leaked documents revealed that PC revenue accounted for less than 3% of GTA Online's weekly earnings, while the PS5 version contributed 40% to 50%. This has fueled speculation that Rockstar prioritizes console releases because they generate the bulk of the revenue.
Technical factors are also cited as a reason for the console-first approach, as it is easier to optimize and tailor games for fixed hardware specifications. Rockstar is known to enter 'crunch' periods ahead of every major release. In fact, reports recently leaked online suggesting that intense crunch is currently underway to meet the November release date for GTA6.
Given the precedents of GTA5 (19 months) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (13 months), it is expected that players will likely have to wait more than a year after the console launch to see GTA6 on PC.
