[MSC Today] FunPlus Phoenix and Top Esports defeat JD Gaming and Gen.G to meet in the finals

FunPlus Phoenix and Top Esports will face each other in the Mid-Season Cup finals.

On the 30th of May (KST), FunPlus Phoenix and Top Esports each defeated JD Gaming and Gen.G, respectively, in the Mid-Season Cup semifinals. JD Gaming won the blind pick game against FunPlus Phoenix but lost the following three games. In the second match, Top Esports swept Gen.G.

In the blind pick game between JD Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix, both bot laners picked Varus. JD Gaming jungler Seo “Kanavi” Jin-hyeok brought out his pocket pick Nidalee. First blood went to JD Gaming as they penetrated the bot lane with Zuo “LvMao” Ming-hao responding to Nidalee’s gank perfectly. Afterward, JD Gaming snowballed the lead to secure the first win in the series.

Starting from Game 2, FunPlus Phoenix banned Nidalee. This time, it was the other way around. Through Gao “Tian” Tian-liang’s Olaf, FunPlus Phoenix marked their territory all around the Rift. They won in all big and small skirmishes and dives. In their victories, Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang’s Karma and Lin “Lwx” Wei-xiang’s Varus scaled well and they were able to secure the Mountain dragon’s soul without much trouble. Although there were a few critical situations, FunPlus Phoenix stole the Elder Dragon and succeeded to destroy JD Gaming’s Nexus.

Game 3 was closer than the previous games. The two teams fought fiercely until the late game. The difference started to widen as FunPlus Phoenix took the Cloud dragon’s soul. Kim “Khan” Dong-ha’s Ornn started to use the Call of the Forge God frequently and initiated fights properly. After securing the Elder Dragon, FunPlus Phoenix also slew Baron to march through JD Gaming’s base.

In Game 4, Zhang “Zoom” Xing-ran’s Wukong picked up first blood against Khan’s Hekarim while FunPlus Phoenix struck back by killing Kanavi’s Ekko. Although it was JD Gaming who took first blood, FunPlus Phoenix had the priority over the Rift. The game started to balance out as JD Gaming fought well in teamfights, but as FunPlus Phoenix took the Infernal dragon’s soul, it was FunPlus Phoenix all the way. With a 3-1 victory, FunPlus Phoenix earned the first ticket to the finals.

Gen.G brought out a rather questionable composition in the blind pick game against Top Esports. Unlike many people’s expectations, Gen.G’s picks were Sett-Elise-Pantheon-Varus-Nautilus. Things didn’t go as Gen.G’s plans as top laner Kim “Rascal” Kwang-hee was solo killed by Bai “369” Jia-hao’s Wukong early in the game. With that, all priority went over to Top Esports. Gen.G didn’t stand a chance against Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-bo’s Varus and the game ended before the 25-minute mark.

In Game 2, Gen.G's bot duo started well by picking up a kill, but Top Esports struck back right away by picking off Kim "Kellin" Hyeong-gyu's Taric. Hung "Karsa" Hao-hsuan's Rek'Sai acted quick on the bot lane. Top Esports added benefits one-sidedly in the top side. In a 2v2 fight between the top-jungle, Top Esports gained two kills without any deaths. At that point, Karsa's Rek'Sai was too strong for Gen.G to stop.

Zhuo "knight" Ding's Syndra shined in Game 3. Although Gwak "Bdd" Bo-seong's Azir scored first blood, Top Esports traded well in Gen.G's following attacks. Once the game was balanced, Top Esports pushed ahead and took a massive lead after a teamfight at the third dragon. Gen.G tried to come back, but they couldn't manage Top Esports' explosive damage. Top Esports shut out Gen.G and reached the finals.
