Nexon's blockchain gaming ecosystem has announced a shift in its business model as it marks its first anniversary. The company plans to move beyond operating a single game and transition into an 'IP platform' that attracts external developers and incorporates other Nexon IPs.

NEXPACE, the division overseeing Nexon's blockchain business, announced the first anniversary of the blockchain MMORPG 'MapleStory N' and its ecosystem, 'MapleStory Universe (MSU),' while unveiling plans for the next phase, 'MSU 2.' MapleStory N was officially launched in global markets, excluding South Korea, on May 15 of last year.
While many domestic game companies have merely announced blockchain initiatives only to stall, Nexon has spent the past year actively operating a long-term project built around its core IP, gathering real-world data in the process. If the vision for 'a platform where anyone can create IP content using AI'—as envisioned by MSU 2—proves successful, it could represent a paradigm shift not just for blockchain gaming, but for the IP business model itself.
The core of the one-year performance report released by NEXPACE is the scale of on-chain activity. According to the company, cumulative on-chain transactions exceeded 150 million, with 3.82 million registered accounts and approximately 850k active wallets. Over 12 million transactions were recorded on the NFT marketplace over the past year.
The scale of the in-game economy was also disclosed. Approximately 48 million 'NXPC,' the base token, were consumed within MapleStory N over the year. NEXPACE estimated this value at approximately $31 million (about ₩46.5 billion) based on the time-weighted average price over the year. Cumulative marketplace transaction volume reached approximately 67 million NXPC, which the company valued at about $46 million (about ₩69 billion). However, these dollar figures are estimates based on token prices and should be distinguished from the actual fiat revenue generated by the company. MapleStory N operates on a revenue model based on user transaction fees rather than a separate cash shop.
The company also stated that it has permanently removed approximately 8 million NXPC from circulation through a token burn policy. It further noted that in the first quarter of 2026, the amount of NXPC consumed by users in the game exceeded the amount issued as rewards for the first time. A winter update also brought in approximately 130k new users.
NEXPACE introduced the 'VIBE IP' concept as the core of MSU 2. The main idea is to allow external developers to create content using MapleStory IP without needing prior license approval, a development studio, or business registration. The system is designed to provide API access to MapleStory N's game and user data, support production with AI-based 'VIBE Coding' tools, and automatically handle licensing, settlement, and payments on-chain.
In a post released to mark the anniversary, NEXPACE CEO Hwang Sun-young stated, "In our second year, I hope builders generate more profit from the IP than NEXPACE does." The intent is to avoid a scenario where the ecosystem is limited by the capabilities of a single company, which happens when relying solely on content created by the IP owner.
Building on the initial economic model, CEO Hwang proposed a new goal: an 'infinite IP playground.' The core of 'MSU 2' is the 'VIBE IP' system, which integrates the 23-year-old 'MapleStory' IP with AI-based creative tools and an on-chain licensing and settlement system. To support this, NEXPACE announced it would operate an ecosystem fund of up to $50 million. MSU 2 will be implemented in phases from 2026 to 2027, with the goal of expanding to other Nexon IPs in the future.
'Whether the in-game economy is active' and 'whether the token has maintained its value' are two different metrics. This first-anniversary announcement focuses on the former. Since on-chain metrics like transaction volume and account numbers can be externally verified via blockchain explorers, the key point to watch moving forward is how these figures coexist with the decline in token value, rather than the numbers themselves.

Meanwhile, MapleStory N is not serviced in South Korea. Current laws regarding the promotion of the game industry prohibit so-called P2E (Play to Earn) models, which allow users to profit by converting in-game assets into virtual assets, viewing them as speculative. Consequently, games that provide virtual assets as mission rewards or allow users to profit from NFT ownership cannot receive a rating classification in Korea. This is why MapleStory N excluded South Korea, North America, and China from its service regions at launch.
Conversely, the base token, NXPC, is listed on domestic exchanges such as Upbit and Bithumb. As a result, while domestic users can buy and sell the token, the situation where they cannot legally play the game that utilizes the token has persisted for a year.
