OpenAI is hosting a game development hackathon utilizing its coding agent, 'Codex.' Song Jae-kyung, a legendary developer behind iconic Korean MMORPGs like 'Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds' and 'Lineage,' will participate throughout the entire process. OpenAI aims to propose a new game development paradigm that bridges 'Codex'-based game creation with actual service integration.
OpenAI announced that it will hold 'OpenAI Game Builders Seoul' in Seoul on the 31st.
This Seoul event is the first of its kind globally to focus on game development using 'Codex.' OpenAI intends to explore new 'Codex'-based production models alongside Korean developers, who are backed by a world-class gaming industry infrastructure and a highly skilled community. Supported by leading domestic game company Com2uS, the event is held under the slogan, "Build with Codex, Play with Hive."
'Codex' is OpenAI's coding agent that supports the entire software development process, including code writing, modification, and testing, based on natural language commands. 'Hive' is Com2uS's game backend platform, which integrates AI plugins to easily implement essential launch and operational functions such as login, payment, user analytics, and security.
During the event, participants will develop games using 'Codex'-powered coding and then integrate them with Com2uS's 'Hive' platform via a 'Codex' plugin to apply essential features for launch and service operations.
Renowned developers who helped build the Korean gaming industry will be on-site to share their experiences with 'Codex'-based development. In particular, Song Jae-kyung, creator of 'Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds,' 'Lineage,' and 'ArcheAge,' will share his personal journey of returning to the game development front lines using 'Codex.' Additional legendary developers participating in the event will be announced sequentially on the official website.
The event will be divided into two tracks. 'Track 1: From Zero to One: Build with Codex' will feature presentations where participants showcase games they have pre-developed using 'Codex.' 'Track 2: Go full Codex: 5 Hour Build' is a hackathon where participants will challenge themselves to develop AAA-quality games within a limited time on the day of the event using the latest version of 'Codex.'
Winning teams from Track 1, selected by on-site voting, will receive OpenAI API credits worth a total of $50k and a one-year subscription to 'ChatGPT Pro.' Track 2 winners will receive a one-year subscription to 'ChatGPT Pro,' and all offline finalists will be provided with $100 in OpenAI API credits.
Oliver Jay, Head of International Business at OpenAI, stated, "Korea is a country with world-class game development capabilities and a creative developer community, making it the perfect place to explore the new possibilities where gaming and AI meet." He added, "Through this event, we hope that legendary developers who have led the Korean game industry and the new generation of developers can share their experiences and ideas using Codex, and expand a new game development culture created alongside AI." He further noted, "We will support more developers in bringing their ideas to life as actual games using Codex and discovering new creative and development possibilities that were previously difficult to attempt."
Applications are open from the 4th to the 26th via the official website. Applicants must submit a game prototype created with 'Codex' along with their development experience. Following a review process, 40 selected teams will be invited to the offline builders' event held on the 31st.
