Which of the Mage's first Unique Skills should you choose?
Compared to other classes with fewer options, the Mage has a wide variety of Unique Skills available in the Skillbook Shop. With six active skills and three highly effective passive skills, choosing can be difficult. You must also carefully consider that even different skills within the same group share a cooldown.
At this stage, MP recovery is generally sufficient, and learning a new skill is far more powerful than a +5 boost to magic damage, so we can rule out passive skills. Excluding 'Fire Crash' and 'Thunder Strike'—which share a group with the Rare Skills you are likely already using—we are left with four options: 'Flame Casting III', 'Flame Slash', 'Chain Shock', and 'Tornado'.

Detailed Comparison of Unique Skill Options
Comparing the remaining four skills based on damage, cooldown, and MP cost yields the following results. While 'Flame Slash' naturally offers the highest single-hit damage, Sol Enchantment prioritizes hunting sustainability—or DPS—over raw burst damage.
Overall, the most recommended Unique Skill is 'Flame Casting III'. Its short cooldown (assuming 12 seconds, based on the cooldown of Flame Casting I as it is a chain skill) results in high DPS, and its MP efficiency is nearly double that of Flame Slash.
Another advantage of learning Flame Casting III is its low MP cost, which allows you to mix in one of your existing Rare Skills, either Thunder or Fire Fall. While results vary based on individual MP recovery, you can generally sustain infinite use of Thunder with just MP potions, while Fire Fall requires both MP potions and food. Since you can now use an additional skill alongside one that was already strong on its own, your overall efficiency is doubled.
Note that there is little difference in DPS between 'Flame Casting III + Fire Fall' and 'Flame Casting III + Thunder'. Since the MP cost difference is as much as 3, we recommend mixing in Thunder rather than Fire Fall.
