Smilegate announced that 'Chaos Zero Nightmare' (hereinafter 'Chaos Zero Nightmare'), a dark fantasy roguelike RPG developed by Super Creative and serviced by the company, reached 8th place on the Chinese Apple App Store revenue chart as of the 17th.
This achievement comes less than a month after the game's official launch in China in partnership with local publisher Tencent. Industry observers note that this is an exceptional success, given the high barriers to entry for foreign subculture-genre games in the Chinese market.
The recent success of 'Chaos Zero Nightmare' was driven by the addition of a new combatant, 'Heidemarie,' and a large-scale content update implemented by the local subsidiary on the 17th. 'Heidemarie' had already captured the attention of users during the previous global update due to her striking appearance and unique skill mechanics.
'Chaos Zero Nightmare' previously topped the Apple App Store's free game popularity chart on its launch day in China on May 28. It also generated significant buzz by reaching the top of the new game rankings on major local platforms, Bilibili and TapTap. The game's original blend of subculture-specific visual elements and a roguelike card strategy system has resonated strongly with Chinese users.
The new combatant 'Fei,' unveiled locally to commemorate the official Chinese launch, led the initial success, with her promotional PV video surpassing 5 million views. Furthermore, a thorough localization marketing strategy proved effective, with content featuring a collaboration between 'Fei' and 'Nuo Dance'—a traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage—receiving in-depth coverage from the state-run media outlet Xinhua News Agency.
Smilegate CBO Baek Young-hoon stated, "We are delighted to achieve such meaningful results in China, one of the world's largest markets for subculture games. Based on the unique quality of "Chaos Zero Nightmare," we will do our best in game development to ensure it remains beloved locally for a long time, while also strengthening our cooperation with Tencent."
Detailed information about 'Chaos Zero Nightmare' can be found on its official X and YouTube channels, as well as the official STOVE website.
