As reported by PC Gamer, Knight Street Games, the developer of the online capture-the-flag game 'Last Flag' released on April 14, has cut nearly half of its staff following the game's commercial failure.
Knight Street Games was co-founded by Mac Reynolds, brother of Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds, and is currently led by Mac Reynolds as CEO. When they first announced their game development plans in 2021, the founders shared that they had always dreamed of making video games. They later unveiled the game at Summer Game Fest 2025 and released a demo during Steam Next Fest late last year.
Despite receiving decent reviews after several rounds of testing, 'Last Flag' failed to capture the interest of gamers upon release. The studio attempted to attract players through a series of free weekend events, but the results were lackluster. The game's peak concurrent player count barely exceeded 500, and with recent numbers hovering around 20, it is effectively a commercial failure.
The failure of 'Last Flag' serves as yet another wake-up call for the gaming industry.
In the multiplayer shooter market, where success depends on building a massive user base, a game failing to gain traction is no longer an unusual occurrence. There are countless examples of games that flopped despite receiving significant backing from major developers or publishers.
However, unlike other failed titles, 'Last Flag' did not suffer from obvious flaws in quality, concept, or design. Most testers and industry insiders who played the game before launch spoke highly of it, and even its Steam reviews remain largely positive. While there was some criticism regarding a lack of content at launch, this is a common weakness shared by most multiplayer-focused games.
Consequently, the industry suspects that the reason for 'Last Flag's' failure was a 'lack of exposure.' Despite the unique selling point of being founded by the brother of a world-famous rock band's lead singer, the game received surprisingly little media coverage and failed to generate buzz within gaming communities. It remained so obscure that even casual gamers were likely unaware it had been released.
Since Night Street Games was not a large studio to begin with, the number of layoffs is small in absolute terms. CEO Mac Reynolds stated that 12 employees were let go in the restructuring, leaving 13 staff members to work on new projects.
Nevertheless, post-launch updates for 'Last Flag' will continue for the next few months. In a Steam announcement, the development team thanked the players and confirmed that new characters, maps, game modes, costumes, and rule sets are scheduled to be released in the coming months.
