NBA 2K League Expansion Draft Primer

BACKGROUND

The NBA 2K League Expansion Draft order was determined by the NBA 2K League Expansion Draft Lottery held Sept. 7 at the NBA office in New York City.  The expansion draft lottery was conducted by drawing ping-pong balls in random order from the official ball machine that is used for the NBA Draft Lottery.  For complete details on the expansion draft lottery, click here.


THE FORMAT

During the expansion draft, the four expansion teams, affiliates of the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves, will each select two players from a pool of 68 players who participated in the inaugural season and were not protected by their original team.  All expansion draftees will join their new teams for the 2019 season.  The expansion draft will be a two-round snake draft, meaning that the second round will have the inverse order of the first round.

ROUND ONE

1. affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks
2. affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets
3. affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves
4. affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers


ROUND TWO

1. affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers
2. affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves
3. affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets
4. affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks


UP NEXT


The first trade window will take place from Sept. 27 to Oct. 10, which is also when the original 17 teams can retain additional players from their 2018 rosters.  During this period, teams will have the opportunity to make trades and retain players in exchange for 2019 draft picks.  For more information on offseason player protection, additional player retainment, and trade rules, click here.
