NC has revealed Guild Wars Afterlife (hereafter Afterlife), a new downloadable content (DLC) expansion for Guild Wars. The release date is set for January 13, 2027, launching simultaneously on PC, Steam, and mobile (iOS, Android).
According to NC, the MMORPG Guild Wars has logged over 9 million cumulative players and more than 1 billion hours played since its launch in 2005. Afterlife is the first new DLC in nearly 20 years since the 2007 expansion Guild Wars Eye of the North, co-developed by NC's North American development studio ArenaNet and co-developer 2weeks.
The centerpiece of Afterlife is 'Unformed,' a dungeon whose layout changes upon every entry. After selecting a starting loadout, players face randomized maps, monsters, and bosses. Explorable terrain includes jungles, cenotes (natural sinkholes), and floating ruins.
Winning battles inside the dungeon allows players to select and acquire new skills through a 'Skill-Drafting' system. The choices are not limited to a character's original profession, enabling players to create builds utilizing skills from any profession.
A new region, 'Xotecha,' is also introduced. Here, players join forces with the 'Order of Moonless Night' to stand against 'Nightmares' and the mysterious 'Cult of Odran'.
In December 2025, marking its 20th anniversary, Guild Wars launched Guild Wars Reforged, a remastered version on PC and Steam. In June of the following year, iOS and Android versions featuring UI and controls tailored for mobile environments were released. Further details on Afterlife can be found on the official Guild Wars website.
