Mod-sharing platform Nexus Mods made it mandatory for creators to declare whether generative artificial intelligence (AI) was used on the upload submission screen starting on November 3. For AI-assisted mods, creators are also required to disclose detailed specifics of the work, allowing users to check how a mod was created before making their choice.
| 📒 | - Mandatory AI disclosure when uploading new mods - AI-assisted mods must explain tools used and where AI output is applied - Deadline for existing mods to meet new requirements is January 2, 2027 |
Classifications are divided based on the role AI played. If AI produced core content such as code, voice lines, or textures, it falls under 'AI Generated Content'. If a human led development and used AI for supporting tasks such as upscaling textures or removing audio noise, it is tagged as 'AI Assisted'. Even if the game files were made manually, an 'AI Media' tag is required if AI was used for thumbnails, promotional videos, or page descriptions.
In addition to the existing classification tags, the requirements for describing 'AI Assisted' work have been made more specific. Creators must explain on the mod page which tools and models were used and exactly where those outputs appear in the final mod. Development and commit histories serve as evidence that a human led the project, and if descriptions or evidence are found lacking during staff review, the classification may be changed.
To help users easily find this information, Nexus Mods plans to place AI tags immediately after adult content tags and improve access to content preference settings from both the homepage and game pages. The way mods are displayed in search results and on game homepages will also be updated in stages.
Nexus Mods decided to continue allowing AI mods on the platform. The platform explained that because AI usage spans a wide range—from code autocompletion to generating game assets like textures and audio—it is difficult to establish clear criteria for a ban. It added that an outright ban would likely lead creators to conceal AI usage rather than reduce it.
Nexus Mods also plans to introduce new permission options indicating whether a creator's work can be used for AI training or tools. The default setting will be 'Ask Me', requiring explicit permission from the author, while existing valid licenses will be respected. Nexus Mods also stated that it will not use uploaded mods for AI training, nor will it sell or license them for AI training purposes.
The deadline for existing mods to meet the new AI-assisted description and permission tag requirements is January 2, 2027. Basic AI disclosure obligations remain in effect during this grace period. Once the deadline passes, staff will notify authors of missing details and request revisions; failure to comply after notification may result in moderation actions such as warnings, account restrictions, or mod removal.
