'Thief: The Dark Project,' the stealth action game released in 1998, is returning as a remaster. Atari, Nightdive Studios, and Eidos-Montréal announced that 'Thief: The Dark Project Remastered' will launch on December 3.
'Thief: The Dark Project' is a first-person stealth action game developed by Looking Glass Studios that focuses on stealth and infiltration rather than direct combat with enemies. In particular, it significantly influenced the evolution of the stealth action genre by utilizing light and sound as core gameplay mechanics. Players step into the shoes of Garrett, a master thief, evading the sight of guards and leveraging the environment alongside various tools to achieve their objectives.
This remaster was built on Nightdive Studios' proprietary KEX Engine. It includes the original game as well as the additional missions and content from the expanded edition, 'Thief Gold,' released in 1999. It features enhanced graphic textures, character models, and animations, supporting up to 4K resolution and 120fps. Furthermore, modern controller support, a weapon and item selection wheel, and a mission selection feature have been added.
Notably, the inclusion of an all-new fan-made campaign, 'The Tarnished Mirror,' as official content stands out. Created with the involvement of the team behind the massive fan-made expansion 'The Black Parade,' the campaign bridges the story between the original game and its sequel, 'Thief II: The Metal Age'. Introducing new factions, environments, and Lovecraftian horror elements, the developers highlighted this collaboration as welcoming community-created content directly into official canon.
'Thief: The Dark Project Remastered' will be released on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Physical editions will also be available for PS5 and Switch 2, and owners of the original Switch version can upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition for free.
