Sensor Tower announced in its 2026 South Korea Mobile Game Market Insights report published on the 2nd that revenue per download (RPD) for Korean mobile games reached an all-time high. While downloads declined by 28% from 2021 to 2026, annual in-app purchase revenue remained stable at approximately $5 billion.
According to the report, South Korean mobile game downloads shrank from approximately 540 million to 390 million over the same period. Sensor Tower analyzed that behind the rising revenue per download (RPD), maintaining and re-engaging existing players, along with LiveOps and monetization strategies, are becoming increasingly vital alongside new user acquisition.
By genre, the composition driving downloads and revenue has shifted. The download share of puzzle games expanded from 17% in 2021 to 32% in 2026, claiming the highest share among all genres. In terms of in-app purchase revenue share, strategy games rose from 13% to 25%, while RPGs dropped from 66% to 43%. Over the past 12 months, idle RPG downloads fell 30% year-over-year, but their in-app purchase revenue surged by 57%. Merge games saw downloads grow by 21% and in-app purchase revenue jump by 94%.
The report also highlighted operational case studies driving sustained player engagement. Major mobile games operated an average of 240 LiveOps events per month. Gossip Harbor expanded its monthly revenue by more than 15-fold from January 2024 to August 2026 through continuous events and content updates. MapleStory: Idle RPG was highlighted as Nexon's operational case study, utilizing event interlinking, phased growth goals, and competitive elements.
Overseas representation for South Korean mobile game publishers has also expanded. From 2021 to 2026, the share of global downloads coming from overseas markets grew from 88% to 92%, while the overseas share of in-app purchase revenue increased from 44% to 49%. The report noted new domestic RPG titles such as MapleStory: Idle RPG and SOL: enchant, while identifying streamlined gameplay based on existing IPs like MapleStory, CookieRun, Ragnarok, and StoneAge alongside multiplatform strategies as key growth opportunities.
In the PC and console sector, global premium game sales revenue on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox totaled approximately $32 billion from Q4 2025 to Q3 2026. Steam revenue grew by 57.3%, rising from $7.27 billion in 2021 to $11.43 billion in 2026.
As a specific title case study, ARC Raiders by Nexon subsidiary Embark Studios was presented. It surpassed 20 million cumulative units sold within seven months of launch, generating over $620 million in premium revenue. It ranked 3rd globally among PC and console games in both premium revenue and unit sales, recording the highest performance among new IPs. By platform, Steam accounted for 43% of cumulative sales, with PlayStation and Xbox combined representing 57%. The report explained that large-scale content updates contributed to re-engaging returning players and boosting active engagement.
Crimson Desert surpassed $420 million in cumulative premium game sales revenue across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. In March and April 2026, it ranked 1st in premium game sales revenue across all three platforms for two consecutive months. Crimson Desert accounted for approximately 90% of Pearl Abyss's total premium game sales revenue.
KRAFTON's Subnautica 2 accumulated over 5 million Steam wishlists prior to launch, selling over 2 million copies on its first day. Peak concurrent players on Steam reached approximately 468,000, maintaining a positive review ratio of over 90%.

Upon its October 2026 release on Steam, AION 2 surpassed 1 million players on its first day and held the 1st spot on Steam's global top sellers list for a full week. As of October 18, in-game spending on Steam reached approximately $29 million, which was 78 times the mobile in-app purchase revenue over the same period. Sensor Tower analyzed this as a case demonstrating the potential for existing MMORPG IPs to expand into the global PC market and diversify revenue streams.
