Developer GPTRACK50 and publisher SEGA have launched Stupid Never Dies, a fast-paced action role-playing game (RPG) starring a zombie, on PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PC via Steam. The game went live on October 21st at 3:00 PM PT. Japan followed a day later.
According to a release, the Standard Edition costs $49.99. The Glorious Idiot Edition ($59.99) adds the TickTock Teddies: Nonsense Overload Pack downloadable content (DLC), which is also sold on its own for $11.99 on Steam and PS5. A live-action trailer, titled ‘Julia Never Dies’, was released alongside the launch.
The trailer works as a prequel. It follows Julia, a rifle-wielding cheerleader fighting her way through the apocalypse, up to the moment she ends up frozen in the freezer of a mall ice cream shop. Davy, the game's hero, later falls for her at first sight.
How Stupid Never Dies plays
Players control Davy, a weak zombie the release describes as ‘the lowest of the low’, with an IQ to match. After a ‘snackcident’, he dives into a monster-ruled underworld to defeat the King of all Monsters (KOM). His goal: bring Julia back to life.
Combat favors attack over defense. Zombies, the release reasons, don't need to dodge if they can't feel a punch. A flexible targeting system lets Davy take on crowds coming from every direction without locking onto a single enemy.
Each dive into the dungeon starts Davy back at level 1, an idea taken from roguelikes (games built around repeated runs that reset on failure). Enemies beaten in earlier dives speed up his growth, though. GPTRACK50 pitches it as a 30-plus-hour game where max level can come in 30 minutes.
Davy can also eat his enemies. The ‘Style Eat’ move heals him and copies the powers of whatever he bites, from werewolves and harpies to vampires; the release lists over 11 styles. Over Technology found on each dive can be spent at Acelino's shop to modify his arms, legs and head.
The Stupid Never Dies Original Soundtrack is out now on Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and other streaming services. It has 80 pop-punk tracks, two of them theme songs. The game supports subtitles in 13 languages, Korean included.
“After nearly three years bringing life (or should that be death?) to Davy, we couldn't be happier to finally share Stupid Never Dies with the world,” said Hiroyuki Kobayashi, President of GPTRACK50. Kobayashi added that the new studio came together out of a love for action games. He thanked players who wishlisted the game, played the demo or left feedback.
GPTRACK50 was founded in Osaka, Japan, in October 2022 by Kobayashi. Its aim is to create new entertainment IPs, mainly console games for a global audience, and later take them into live-action film and animation. According to the studio, its staff have worked on the Devil May Cry and Resident Evil series, as well as Dragon's Dogma. SEGA, the game's publisher, is headquartered in Tokyo.
