Riot Games announced that the 2026 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship (hereafter World Championship) will kick off on October 16 at 3:00 a.m. KST. In the opening stage, the Play-In Stage, four teams will compete for a single spot in the Swiss Stage.
All matches in the Play-In Stage will be played in a best-of-five (Bo5) format under a double-elimination system. The event will take place at the Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles, USA, running from October 16 to 19.
The opening match will feature North America's (LCS) Cloud9 Kia (C9) facing off against EMEA's (LEC) Karmine Corp (KC). Following their series, Brazil's (CBLOL) FURIA (FUR) will take on the Asia-Pacific's (LCP) MVK Esports (MVK) at 8:00 a.m. All match times mentioned hereafter are based on KST.
Both teams featured in the opening match have registered Korean players in their top and mid lane slots. Karmine Corp features top laner "Canna" Kim Chang-dong and mid laner "kyeahoo" Kang Ye-hoo, both LCK veterans. Cloud9 Kia's roster includes top laner "Thanatos" Park Seung-gyu and mid laner "Loki" Lee Sang-min in those respective positions.
Karmine Corp makes its World Championship debut after finishing as runners-up in both the newly inaugurated LEC Versus season kickoff event and the Spring Split earlier this year. Cloud9 Kia finished the LCS Spring Regular Season in 1st place with an undefeated 7-0 record, and secured its World Championship qualification by defeating LYON 3-1 in the Summer Playoffs.
FURIA qualified for the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) in Daejeon as the CBLOL Split 1 champions. They subsequently finished as runners-up in Split 2, entering this tournament as Brazil's #2 seed. MVK Esports, having finished 3rd in LCP Split 3, earned their spot based on championship points accumulated throughout the season.
Representing the LCK (League of Legends Champions Korea), Gen.G, Hanwha Life Esports, T1, and Dplus KIA will begin their campaign in the Swiss Stage on October 24. LCK teams have won 10 of the 15 previous World Championships. If an LCK team lifts the trophy this year, it will extend the region's championship streak—running since 2022—to five consecutive years.
Held in Allen, Texas, USA, the Swiss Stage features 16 teams, including those advancing from the Play-In Stage. Teams with matching win-loss records will face each other, and the eight teams that reach three wins first will advance to the Knockout Stage. Teams that accumulate three losses will be eliminated. Matches are primarily best-of-one (Bo1), while qualification and elimination matches will be played in a best-of-three (Bo3) format.
Teams advancing to the Knockout Stage will compete in a best-of-five (Bo5) format from the quarterfinals through to the finals to crown the champion. The quarterfinals and semifinals will also be hosted in Allen, Texas. The Grand Finals will take place on November 15 at 4:00 a.m. KST at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
