Square Enix has launched FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, a turn-based role-playing game (RPG) and the first HD-2D entry in the FINAL FANTASY series, on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
According to a release, the PC version is out on Steam and Xbox on PC. A free demo is also available, and save data carries over to the full game on all platforms. Square Enix released a launch trailer alongside the news.
HD-2D is the visual style Square Enix first used in Octopath Traveler. It places pixel-art characters in 3D environments with modern lighting and depth-of-field effects, giving retro-style sprites a layered, diorama-like look.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is based on the first story arc of the mobile RPG FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius. The release says it is not a direct port, and that the story has been ‘refined and extensively rebuilt’ as a full console RPG.
Story and combat
The game follows Rain, a knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt who was put in command of an airship squadron at a young age. He sets out with his childhood friend Laswell on what Square Enix calls a ‘tale of Crystals’. Chocobos, espers and airships all return.
Battles are turn-based. Players can add Visions to the party, which the release describes as ‘echoes of beloved FINAL FANTASY characters’ such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. Each Vision fights alongside the party with its own skills, and their Resonance attacks play out as cinematic special moves.
Hitting enemy weaknesses staggers foes, breaks their defenses and earns the party extra turns. Side content includes optional bosses, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms (where enemies are sealed inside legendary weapons) and a fight with Ultima Weapon, a recurring boss in the series.
