Nexon has halted the development of 'Durango World' (Project DX), which had been in development based on the 'Durango: Wild Lands' IP. A Nexon official confirmed the cancellation on the 8th. This comes 3 years and 10 months after it was first revealed under the working title 'Project DX' on November 8, 2022.
'Durango World' was an open-world MMORPG developed by Nexon Games. Aiming to inherit the original game's core elements—dinosaurs and crafting—while advancing graphics and systems, the project set out to enhance the core fun of MMORPGs. NAT Games initially led development before the project was transferred to Nexon Games following NAT Games' merger with Nexon GT in March 2022.
The title was first unveiled on-site at G-STAR 2022. A 25-second teaser video featured a roaring dinosaur set in the wild, accompanied by the phrase "Beyond the Durango" to announce it as a new title carrying on the original IP. Nexon released a second trailer with a post-apocalyptic atmosphere at G-STAR 2024 on October 30, 2024. Nexon subsequently filed a trademark for 'Durango World' in August 2025.
This decision comes four months after Nexon announced it would keep the project in its development pipeline. In March 2026, Nexon denied rumors regarding the dissolution of the development team and explicitly mentioned the game as a major upcoming title at a shareholders' meeting that same month. On May 14, Nexon announced the cancellation of three projects that failed to meet quality and commercial standards, but kept 'Durango World' in its pipeline. At the time, the targeted release window was 2027.
Personnel shifts in the development team followed. In August 2025, Nexon Games recruited Lee Chan, former CEO of Moai Games who created 'EOS' and 'Traha', to reorganize the development team.
The original game, 'Durango: Wild Lands', was a sandbox MMORPG developed by Nexon's What! Studio and released on January 25, 2018. It drew attention for its setting of surviving and pioneering in an unknown land inhabited by dinosaurs, but after announcing its shutdown in October 2019, it ended service on December 18. Its service period lasted 1 year and 11 months.
