The Steam store page for 'Tactical Commanders R', which announced its revival in May this year through developer ChogaSoft, went live today (7th), generating significant buzz.
'Tactical Commanders' is an RTS game developed by Nexon. Unlike conventional RTS titles at the time, it combined online game level systems with faction warfare, making a massive splash among Korean gamers who primarily played online games back then.
In particular, the interplanetary warfare based on territorial control operated through control-point capture mechanics, giving rise to diverse strategies. Players (commanders) coordinated tactics—with some acting as the anvil, others flanking as the hammer for ambush attacks, and others exploiting openings to capture bases—offering a distinctly different kind of fun compared to typical 1v1-focused RTS games.
Despite its innovative systems and compelling gameplay, 'Tactical Commanders' shut down on December 31, 2005, roughly six years after launching official service on January 1, 2001, leaving many gamers disappointed at the time. As a result, even in recent years, fans have voiced their desire for 'Tactical Commanders' to return whenever Nexon announced IP revivals or related updates.
Hope for 'Tactical Commanders' sparkled on December 18 last year when Nexon unveiled "NEXON Replay," an open-licensing project allowing anyone to develop games using its IP. This was because 'Tactical Commanders' was revealed to be on the initial IP list.
Then, in May this year—about five months after the project was unveiled—developer ChogaSoft announced it was developing a remastered version titled 'Tactical Commanders R', turning the wishes of waiting fans into reality.
As a remastered title, 'Tactical Commanders R' inherits the fundamental systems of the original game. The Steam store page lists large-scale real-time strategy battles, commanding various troops and forces, strategic positioning and battlefield control, and team-based combat and cooperative play as key features. It also highlights gameplay that carries over the feel of the original 'Tactical Commanders', along with graphic and presentation enhancements tailored for modern environments, and tense, sci-fi-style battlefields.
Of course, simply restoring the original system verbatim is not the sole objective. ChogaSoft stated, "We plan to go beyond a simple restoration and add new elements within a range that does not disrupt the core fun of the original." This indicates an intention to maintain the original feel while introducing fresh entertainment and preparing for long-term service.
The official release date for 'Tactical Commanders R' has yet to be determined. However, after previously announcing via its official Discord that a small-scale CBT is scheduled for September to October, and now registering its Steam store page, detailed news regarding the CBT is expected soon.
