Gamescom 2026, the world's largest gaming exhibition taking place this August, is set to be the biggest in its history, having completely sold out its exhibition space for the first time and confirmed the attendance of numerous high-ranking political and government figures, including the President of Germany. The organizers have set the theme for this year's event as 'Games Spark Excitement for the Future.'

According to the German Games Industry Association and Koelnmesse, the co-organizers of Gamescom, all exhibition space for this year has been fully booked for the first time in the event's history.
With even the expanded exhibition area from last year filled early, the organizers are already considering further expansion for 2027 to meet growing demand. Tim Endres, Director of Gamescom, described the full booking as an encouraging sign for the entire industry, while Felix Falk, Managing Director of the association, expressed confidence in the record-breaking scale, noting that demand for participation is higher than ever.
Political interest is also at an all-time high. On Thursday, August 27, during the event, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will become the first sitting president to visit Gamescom. He will mark the opening of the 'Gamescom Congress,' participate in a discussion on games and democracy, and tour the exhibition floor.
A day earlier, on August 26, Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; Lars Klingbeil, Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance; Dorothee Bär, Minister of Research; and Hendrik Wüst, Minister - President of North Rhine - Westphalia (NRW), will attend the official opening of Gamescom. Key topics for discussion will include the competitiveness of Germany and Europe as a hub for the gaming industry, the implementation of tax-based game support outlined in the coalition agreement, and the potential of games for democracy.
The lineup of participating companies has also expanded. The organizers confirmed the addition of Aerosoft, Embark Studios, Giants Software, KONAMI, Level Infinite, NC, and Tencent Games. Major Korean game companies, including KRAFTON, which had already announced its participation, will also be represented on the European stage. The existing lineup includes BANDAI NAMCO, CAPCOM, CD PROJEKT RED, EA, Nintendo, SEGA, Ubisoft, Xbox, HoYoverse, and NetEase.
Along with the main theme, the organizers introduced two key trends. 'Saving the world through play' focuses on the social influence of the community, as seen through large-scale donations via speedruns and creator broadcasts, as well as in-game petitions and protests. 'Small teams, huge success' highlights the rise of indie games, where small development teams are achieving global success and winning awards.
Gamescom 2026 will be held from August 24 to 30 in Cologne, Germany, and online. The 'Gamescom week' kicks off on August 24 with the developer conference 'Gamescom Dev,' followed by the main exhibition for industry professionals and media from August 26 to 30.
On the eve of the opening, August 25, 'Opening Night Live (ONL)' will be held, hosted by Geoff Keighley and co-hosted by Eefje 'Sjokz' Depoortere. The organizers announced that they plan to reveal news regarding 'Metro 2039' and 'The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past,' both scheduled for release in 2027.
Community programs have also been expanded. The speedrun event 'Games Done Quick (GDQ)' will be held in Europe for the first time, alongside the 'Gamescom Awesome Indies Show' in partnership with IGN, a cosplay village, and a cosplay contest. The GDQ community will also be collecting donations for the 'Gaming for Democracy' campaign.
