The news that 'Final Fantasy XIV,' the flagship MMORPG from Square Enix, will be released for the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced today (the 25th) at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival held in Anaheim.
The Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival is the largest event for the franchise, serving as the annual venue for major announcements such as new expansions, jobs, and races. This year's event featured the teaser trailer for the 8.0 expansion, 'Seeker of Silver,' and introduced new features including the 'Adventurer Activity' system, an evolved gear system, and character skill skins, along with a confirmed release date of January 2027.

Beyond the expansion, there was more welcome news regarding changes to the global server matching system. A 'cross-server matching within region' feature will be added, allowing players to match freely across all servers within the same region, with testing scheduled during the 7.5x patch cycle. Producer Naoki Yoshida explained, "We plan to conduct initial testing in the Japan region and will sequentially expand to North America, Europe, and China once stability is confirmed."
Among the various announcements, the news of the Nintendo Switch 2 version stood out. The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is scheduled to officially launch this August. Prior to the official release, there will be a one-month early access period during which the game will be free to play.
While online games on console platforms typically require a separate paid membership, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is an exception; players can enjoy the game without a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Of course, purchasing the Nintendo Switch 2 package does not grant free access to all services. Like other platforms, a separate paid subscription (monthly fee) is required. However, users already subscribed to Final Fantasy XIV on other platforms can access it at a lower cost. Producer Naoki Yoshida stated, "If a user already subscribed on another platform purchases the Switch 2 package, they can add the subscription at a 50% discount."
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is scheduled for service in August 2026. Leading up to this, a series of updates will be released: Patch 7.5 on April 28, Patch 7.51 on June 2, Patch 7.55 on July 28, and Patch 7.56 on September 8.
