Daniele "Jiizuke" di Mauro has confirmed via Twitter that he is without a team for the 2022 League of Legends esports season. Jiizuke was a vital part of EG's success last season, but the 2021 LCS Summer Split All-Pro mid laner has been unable to find a new home for 2022.
It was expected that Jiizuke departed Evil Geniuses early in the off-season. EG has been relatively transparent about Joseph "jojopyun" Joon Pyun being the future for the organization, and after the success of AD carry Kyle "Danny" Sakamaki in his debut split this past summer, the organization has built credibility with their focus on talent development.
Jiizuke entering the 2022 season without a team, however, is an unexpected outcome. The Italian mid laner made his LEC debut in the 2017 EU LCS Spring split for Team Vitality. VIT attended the World Championship in Jiizuke's rookie season, but after a rough 2019, Jiizuke crossed the Atlantic Ocean to play for Evil Geniuses.
Jiizuke is not the only veteran mid laner unsigned this off-season. Team Liquid mid laner Nicolaj "Jensen" Jensen and Fnatic mid laner Yasin "Nisqy" Dincer both attended Worlds 2021, but both players are teamless heading into 2022.
However, Jensen and Nisqy are disadvantaged by their contract buyouts complicating negotiations, whereas Jiizuke's contract with Evil Geniuses expired in November 2021.
Other veteran players with strong track records in other positions have also found themselves teamless this off-season. Jiizuke's former teammate on Evil Geniuses Dennis "Svenskeren "Johnsen has found himself without a team to jungle for in 2022, and following Evil Geniuses' acquisition of support Philippe "Vulcan" Laflamme from Cloud9, nothing has been made public about the future of support Lee "IgNar" Dong-geun, who signed a two-year contract with EG before the 2021 season.
