The first round of the knockout stage of the 2021 League of Legends World Championship has concluded, and with the quarterfinals matches all in the books, the semifinals matches have been set. On one side of the bracket, Gen.G Esports will face off against EDward Gaming, and on the other, reigning World champions DWG KIA will face off against T1, the organization with the most Summoner's Cups in LoL esports history.
Let's take a look at how these four teams got to the semifinals of Worlds 2021.
All four teams avoided the Worlds 2021 Play-in because of their respective seeding and regional priority based on previous international experiences. DWG KIA, who secured South Korea's #1 seed by winning the 2021 LCK Summer Playoffs, finished in 1st place in Group A with a perfect 6-0 record, content to watch Cloud9, Rogue, and FunPlus Phoenix fight over the scraps of the 2nd seed in the group.
EDward Gaming started off Group B 4-0, but it was T1 who took 1st place in the group with a 5-1 record as EDG had to settle for the 2nd seed. Gen.G finished tied atop Group D with MAD Lions, and while both teams qualified for the knockout stage, Gen.G's win over MAD in the tiebreaker following the conclusion of the group stage secured a 3rd #1 group stage seed for Korea.
T1 faced off against fellow LCK team Hanwha Life Esports, who qualified for the knockout stage as the 2nd seed from Group C after losing a tiebreaker to Royal Never Give Up for the 1st seed. T1 dispatched of HLE in a clean sweep. Next, EDG and RNG faced off in a battle of who would be the last team to represent the LPL, and after five grueling games, it was EDG who took the 3-2 win and moved on to the semifinals.
DWG KIA made quick work of MAD Lions 3-0, and the very next day, Gen.G swept Cloud9 as well.
With three LCK teams and one LPL team left in the tournament, EDG and Gen.G will face off on one side of the bracket, while T1 and DK battle it out on the other. The winners will face off in the finals of Worlds 2021 to see who will lift the Summoner's Cup.
