DWG ShowMaker: "Chovy played out the laning phase incredibly well, and was much better than me in lane, so I want to give credit where it’s due."

On Feb. 20th, day 24 of the 2021 LCK Spring split took place, with DWG KIA taking a 2-1 series victory against Hanwha Life Esports in the second match of the day. It was a full three-game series, with off-meta champions such as Tristana and Heimerdinger were picked in game 3.

The mid laner for DWG KIA, Heo “ShowMaker” Su, joined Inven for a post-victory interview.

Today’s victory against Hanwha Life Esports was a hard-fought one, to say the least. How do you feel about the victory?

It was our first match of round 2, and it was against HLE, so it was a very important match. I’m thoroughly relieved and happy that we won.

While DK did drop a series in round 1 against Fredit BRION, the team’s now on a seven-match win streak. What are your thoughts on people saying that DWG KIA is a team that’s a cut above the rest currently?

We do have a good record, but right now, any team in the LCK has the potential to beat anyone. I don’t know about us being a cut above the rest, but I know that the threat of dropping a series is very real.

Both teams in game 3 pulled out some interesting picks. Can you give us some insight on DK’s eccentric picks, as well as HLE’s?

I actually practiced Tristana a lot in solo queue. I thought that it was pretty good, so I wasn’t really surprised when Chovy picked her. In terms of Heimerdinger, he was one of the champions that our support player, BeryL, practiced since last year, so we were able to make great use of his wide champion pool.

HLE always had the counterpick for the mid lane this series. Did you feel pressured about playing into a counter match-up?

Chovy played out the laning phase incredibly well, and was much better than me in lane, so I want to give credit where it’s due. I didn’t think too hard about the counterpick.

What’s DWG KIA’s goal for round 2 of this split?

We finished round 1 with an 8-1 record, so we hope to finish round 2 undefeated. It’ll be hard, but our goal is to continue being in 1st place.

Before the end of the series, Kim “Khan” Dong-ha called the other players, ‘troublemakers’. How come?

Our top and jungle played very well this series, while mid and bottom got behind on numerous occasions. He has every right to call us troublemakers (laughter).

Which team do you think will be DWG KIA’s biggest obstacle in going undefeated during round 2?

Definitely Gen.G. I think they’ve regained their form, and they’ve always been good during the regular season.

The consensus is that right now, you and Chovy are the two best mid lakers of the LCK. Since the two of you play so well in your games, fans naturally become more interested in both you and Chovy. How do you evaluate Chovy as a player?

One of his biggest strengths comes from his laning. It’s hard to see him miss a CS, which is reflective of the CS gap that he always creates against his opponents. This means that he’s very meticulous during the laning phase.

DWG KIA’s next opponents are Liiv SANDBOX. They recently announced changes to their roster, so it must be hard to predict how strong they are.

They have a new bot laner, so we’ll need to study them thoroughly. (Laughter) I’ll make sure to push my lane fast, so I can go roam and kill Chae-hwan [Prince, the starting bot laner for round 2].

Lastly, is there anything that you’d like to say?

We’re working as hard as we can to elevate our gameplay, so please continue to send us your support!
