[Worlds 2020] TSM, LGD eliminated from Worlds 2020, Gen.G, Fnatic advance

UPDATE: Fnatic and Gen.G played in the final match of the day to decide the first seed, ending in a Gen.G win. Each was 4-1 heading into the match, and "Gen.G outplayed Fnatic in every aspect of the game," quoted Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere after FNC's loss. This is Europe's second seed to qualify to the knockouts, and the second to lose the first seed in the final game. It's also the LCK's second seed to advance, both as first seeds.

Original story

TSM was eliminated from Group C at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. The #1 seed from the League of Legends Championship Series failed to win a game against Fnatic, Gen.G, and LGD in the first round-robin and after falling to 0-4 in a second loss to Fnatic, TSM was mathematically eliminated from moving on to the knockout stage.

LGD was eliminated after a second loss on the day against Fnatic. They played a close game against Gen.G to start their day, nearly taking the victory, but getting aced while hitting an open Nexus. Fnatic beat them in their next game, which put both Fnatic and Gen.G at 4-1 and LGD at 2-3, which made it impossible for them to catch up for a potential tiebreaker.

TSM came into the second round-robin needing to win all three of its games as a 3-3 record would have kept TSM's knockout stage hopes alive. Fnatic is now 3-1 and Gen.G and LGD, who play each other next, are both 2-1, meaning the winner will also be 3-1. Because of this, the worst record a team can have to escape Group C is 3-3.

TSM did not win either of its last two matches at Worlds 2020, marking the first time a #1 seed from a major region has failed to record a win in the history of the World Championship. TSM can walk away acknowledging that they provided a wealth of international experience to both jungler Mingyi "Spica" Lu and top laner Sergen "Broken Blade" Çelik.

TSM is the second North American team at Worlds 2020 to be eliminated in the group stage. Team Liquid, who qualified for the main event through the play-in, narrowly missed a tiebreaker in Group A that could've potentially qualified them further.

FlyQuest will face the tall task of trying to survive Group D over Unicorns of Love, Top Esports, and DRX as the only North American representative left at Worlds.
