[Worlds 2020] INTZ RedBert: "After going 0-3 [...] we asked our mothers to pray"

INTZ has officially ended its run in the 2020 League of Legends Worlds Championship as the second team to be sent home. The roller-coaster ride of a day started with a victory over the then-undefeated Team Liquid, and the future looked promising. Unfortunately, the intrepid team fell to the ages-old “CBLoL” prophecy of being eliminated in tiebreakers.

After the matches, Inven Global reporter Lara Lunardi was joined by INTZ’s Support, Ygor "RedBert" Freitas, to talk about the team’s run in the championship and what lessons they will be taking home.

What a day you had, huh?

[laughs] A day of ups and downs… Ending on a downer, now…

Let's talk about your upset against Liquid. Tell me about the game plan you had, the execution… Were you satisfied with the result?

The plan against Liquid was very concrete for us, we imagined that Broxah would play very disconnected from his team at the beginning of the game, and the plan was to abuse this early on. It turned out very well. In teamfights we managed to fit in together and not be far behind in the rotations. I was very happy with our performance against them.

Where was this INTZ when you faced the MAD Lions?

[laughs]

Oh no, sorry! [laughs]

I think we started the game against MAD Lions well, but it ended up that in the end, we were a little nervous about being so close to winning, so we got all screwed up, we ended up doing a lot of sh*tty plays, giving the advantage that we had. I imagine we had an advantage, actually, I hadn't seen the gold graphics, but I believe we had an advantage and ended up handing it over because we were nervous about winning the game. That was our biggest mistake.

"Our region has been declining, or at the very least, it has not been evolving as much as other regions."

This week, I interviewed Shini and he told me that all the players in the China Super Server are very mechanically skilled. What did you learn from that, or what has changed in the way that you play comparing CBLoL versus Worlds?

This helped us to seek improvement in our mechanics, but I think it ended up getting in the way a little because we didn’t have training every day, and we ended up catching super server habits from this very chaotic solo queue. It hindered us a bit when it came to playing, we were "dumber" during training and on the stage itself.

After a lot of conversation with the team, we reviewed all the CBLoL games and we managed to find ourselves. It was a little late, and it was only against Liquid, against MAD we got close but ended up not winning.

This is the third or fourth consecutive year that CBLoL ends up being eliminated in the tie-breakers. Why do you think CBLoL has difficulties with international regions?

Our region has been declining, or at the very least, it has not been evolving as much as other regions. We may even have a well-disputed championship at CBLoL, but when we get here, the teams that represent us end up being unable to get through, or to make good games against other regions. The times I came, I felt very nervous in the first games, but any mistake that we make out of nervousness ends up being punished and we can even lose the game due to an error.

And how do you separate nervousness from the game? Do you have methods to calm down… some Zen methods, maybe? [laughs]

[laughs] We used to do meditation before the games in Brazil, but we didn't get to do that here. After going 0-3, we decided to come back with some rituals, we asked our mothers to pray… we asked to meditate, clap on the loading screen… and we got a game!

Returning to CBLoL, since you think that the region is not improving, what is missing? What would you personally change?

What is missing is for all teams to take training more seriously and seek improvement during their own training. Sometimes we start losing and end up not taking the third training game seriously, and I think that is what counts most for us. And the only way we have to practice. If a player doesn't take it as seriously as the others, it ends up getting in the way.

Aside from today's result, how has your experience been there in China?

[nervous laughter]

"What is missing is for all [CBLOL] teams to take training more seriously and seek improvement during their own training."

When I saw your tweets about the giant insects in your room I thought “my God” ... [laughs]

Ah, it was cool, as we were already quarantined in Brazil, it was relatively quiet, it was good to adapt to the jetlag. The hotel here is very good, I liked to play solo queue… I tried to get Challenger but I failed miserably…

But it was really cool to play Worlds, it’s always great to have the opportunity to play against the regions I watch, to play against players who I idolized, playing against CoreJJ is always very good, I respect him a lot.

And is there any other player that you wish you had the chance to play against?

I wanted to play against Rekkles. He is very good, in solo queue we become emote friends, I send one and he responds. [laughs]

And what are you going to take to Brazil…

Experience is the standard answer for Brazilians ... [laughs]

Oh I don't know, experience meme aside, that's what you can take. You can always get something out of here and take it to the next time. The result does not always come, but I will keep trying to come back here and represent the country well.

Original Interview in PT-BR

Que dia que voce teve, ein?

[risos] Um dia de altos e baixos… Terminando no baixo, agora…

[risos]

E o que você vai levar pro Brasil…

Experiência é a resposta padrão pros Brasileiros… [risos]
