If you rely on only one type of attack, you might become a specialist, but you’ll also be easy to counter. Now is the time to master a mix of quick build-ups, through-balls, flank play, and long-range shooting depending on the situation.

Looking at the flow of recent official matches, it's rare to see one specific route used repeatedly. Still, if you had to choose the most efficient attacking method, it would be the through-ball followed by a run and a finish. This is the best way to exploit the space behind the defense when the opponent's back line is pushed up.

Rather than forcing a through-ball the moment you get the ball, it’s better to connect with a second-line player and wait for the striker’s timing. Penetration is about timing, not just speed. The 'Line Breaker' trait is what gives these runs wings. Since the responsiveness to through-balls has been improved recently, it has become a go-to trait for many players.

If you want to score with a crisp through-ball that cuts across the pitch, I recommend looking for players with the Line Breaker trait in the transfer market. Of course, you can also use it as an acquired trait through enhancement.

Attacking down the flanks is an easy route for beginner managers to try. It’s generally easier to find space there than in the center. If you give the aforementioned Line Breaker trait to your winger, you can break down the flank with a single through-ball. From there, you have various options: cross, cut-back, or reset the tempo.

However, it’s hard to say that flank attacks always have a high success rate. FCO crosses are primarily based on the 'A' key, but various inputs are used depending on the situation. There’s the 'ZA' cross, which delivers a low-trajectory ball to a running player in the center, and the 'AA' cross, which is used for shorter targets. You can also use 'ZS' for cut-backs.

As you can see, crossing requires know-how on how to deliver the ball based on the situation and timing. This only comes with experience and practice. Calmly outmaneuvering the defense and making a cut-back to an unmarked player is often the most successful approach.

In a set-piece situation where the opponent is sitting deep in the box, it’s hard to find space for penetration. You could use manual runs, but that might be difficult for beginners who aren't used to the controls yet. If neither central breakthroughs nor flank attacks are working, keep long-range shots in your arsenal.

If you have a shooting angle, especially at the top of the arc or in the half-space, it’s worth taking a bold shot. Forcing the opponent to respect your long-range threat will draw their defenders out, which in turn creates space for penetration or passes. Check your angle to the goal, adjust your 'D' gauge, or use 'ZD' to aim for a beautiful Finesse Shot. Even if it’s just a shot on target, it makes the opponent wary, which can open up space for other attacks.

However, don't just spam long-range shots. Compared to central through-balls that create clear scoring chances or flank attacks with multiple options, long-range shots can easily result in wasted possession. They are particularly ineffective when defenders are pressing you. It might get blocked, but if the ball gets through, it has a high chance of hitting the back of the net, so it's worth considering.

Actually, more important than the specific attacking routes mentioned above is making the opponent realize you have multiple ways to build an attack. If you only repeat penetration runs, or only cross or shoot from distance for 90 minutes, you become very easy to defend against. Using a variety of routes allows you to play mind games with your opponent and gain an advantage.

You also need to make decisions based on the opponent's movement. If they are pressing high with a high defensive line, look for a through-ball after a quick press-break. If they are sitting back and maintaining their shape, try long-range shots. If they are using their fullbacks aggressively in attack, focus on counter-attacks using your wingers.

Especially when your attack is blocked, it’s good to control the tempo with second-line link-up play. Beginners often try to connect directly to the striker as soon as they get the ball, but this pattern is easy to intercept and carries high risk. Calmly scan your surroundings and pass to a midfielder or fullback joining the attack to control the tempo and draw the opponent out. Fast build-up isn't always the answer.
